Panel One: Future of General Studies

Peter Awn - Dean of General Studies
Curtis Rodgers - Dean of Admissions
Joe Ienuso - Manhattanville

Joe: Been in university for 19 years. Began as admissions director for ESC. Then moved to financial aid for CC. Ready to talk about the Manhattanville expansion.

My team and I on behalf of the University are working on a 7 month process of land use review - something the city of New York asks of every rezone project in New York. Community recommended 10 changes. Stringer moved the plan through the planning commission. City Planning commission voted 10 for, 1 against, 1 abstain.

Next step - 50 days. There is possibly one more (city?) council meeting. Or the approval could be taken immediately.

So overall, it's a seven month process with a hearing at every level in the process (three).

Question: how long from approval until building?
Answer: if we receive approval, 6-9 months - abatement and demolition. Construction itself will take 25 - 30 years. Design of the first five buildings is being done as we speak.

Question: Research facilities to Dorms?
Answer: Three recommendations were made in fact. Dimensions of two buildings. Site converted to university housing for older, professional students, from academic research. Final change was to lower the height of the buildings by 50%.

Question: About the Community Board voting against Columbia plan, and the vocal community opinion. Where is opposition coming from and the need for changes? Particularly affordable housing and secondary displacement 3300+ people.
