U.S. Foreign Policy

The new hegemon...

OPEC will take in nearly $1 trillion due to record high crude oil prices. Put that in your gas tank.

Mission Accomplished... just kidding

Remember that ridiculous "Mission Accomplished" backdrop to President Bush's May 1, 2003 Iraq speech? Well, after five long years the White House has finally admitted their mistake. The Herald Sun quotes White House spokeswoman Dana Perino:

"President Bush is well aware that the banner should have been much more specific, and said, 'Mission Accomplished For These Sailors Who Are On This Ship On Their Mission....' We have certainly paid a price for not being more specific on that banner. And I recognize that the media is going to play this up again tomorrow, as they do every single year."

More specific? That's interesting, because this White House press release from May 1, 2003 suggests that Bush actually thought the war had ended. Here's a Bush quote from that document:

"Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed. And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country."

Mission accomplished, indeed.

Quote of the Day: Hawkish Hill

Hillary clinton iran

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran... In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."

-Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, on what she would do as president if the Islamic Republic of Iran were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel.

It's understandable that Hillary wants to look tough, but isn't this overdoing it? Read the full Oman Times article here and decide.
