Committee on Instruction

6-20-08

Dear GSers,

I hope that summer is treating you all very well, and that you are studying/sleeping/traveling/dreaming well.

I want to congratulate the winner of the 2008 GS Teachers Award.  This year’s recipient is Annette Insdorf, an award winning professor of Film and by all accounts a phenomenal instructor.  I look forward to arranging an event where GS students will have an opportunity to meet Professor Insdorf, during the first part of the fall term.

On another note, I want to hear from you if there is an academic issue you would like to see addressed in the coming year.  I cannot guarantee any sort of results, but the more feedback I receive, the better equipped I will be to speak with the administration.

Keep up the excellent studies!

Dear GSers,
On behalf of the Dean Of Students office, and the General Studies student council, I am pleased to announce the General Studies senior thesis presentation.  Join us on Friday, May 2nd from 5 until 7 PM, in 602 Lewisohn Hall.  Come share in the euphoria of completion, the satisfaction of knowledge, and the sharing of inspiration.  Come together to honor the achievements these seniors and be inspired!

Recipients of the GS Thesis Stipend will be discussing their research, their findings and their experiences creating quality scholarship.  Some thesis topics include:  Speaking Sartorially: Semiotics in African American Clothing, styled by Monique Long, and Racially Significant Social and Economic Dissimilation on Montana's Blackfeet and Flathead Reservations crafted by Jesse Dean.  These, however, are only the tip of the iceberg; there are approximately 10 seniors presenting equally intriguing topics making this a fascinating event and one that will inspire and motivate future learning for all students.

If you have any questions please email Jake at jfm2135@columbia.edu.  Light refreshments will be served.  Please dress professionally.

Dear Gsers,

Yes yes, its true, class registration is just around the corner. Summer term registration is from April 7-11, and fall registration is from April 14-18. Although the fall may seem a long way off, take time to optimize your schedule now.

Some tips:
-Go through the course listings located here and see what appeals to you.
-Look out for your first available registration period on SSOL
-Be prepared with a written list of the classes you are most interested in taking, and make sure to enter in your choices the first minute your registration period begins.

As an old captain often told me “remember your five p’s: prior planning prevents piss poor performance!”

3-25-2008:

Tip: See the transcript your future employers and educators will see.

Go to student services in Kent Hall and ask for a non-official transcript. They will be happy to print you a free copy. This is helpful to you because it shows not only your grades, but also the percentage of people who achieved an “A” range grade (A+ to A-) in any given lecture class. Note that this percent will not appear for any seminar classes.

If anyone has academic or administrative tips they think other students could use, please feel free to email them to me at jfm2135@columbia.edu and I will post them on this page. As with all academic undertakings, I will be sure to cite my source!

3-24-2008: Hello Fellow GSers! My name is Jake Matilsky (jfm2135@columbia.edu), and I am your new Academic Affairs Representative. I hope you are all well rested from a pleasant spring break. For my part, I am revitalized and ready to get back into Butler.

Additionally, I will be holding office hours from Noon until 1 PM every Friday in the GS lounge. I will be wearing a black hat and sitting in the south east corner.

Please come and tell me about any academic issues that may come up during the remainder of the term. I may not have all the answers, but I will make sure to find answers to any questions you may have about academic policies and procedures.
